Former WWE superstar Edge has been cast as a villain in the upcoming season of The CW’s The Flash. The Flash has some incredible momentum as it begins production on season 2. Along with the news that season 2 would see the introduction of other speedsters from the various alternate Earths which was teased in the season 1 finale.
We have been getting a lot of casting news recently as well as a teaser trailer showing a blue streak zipping through the streets of Central City. However the most exciting piece of news for me is that Adam Copeland, or Edge to us fans, has been cast as Atom-Smasher. Edge is one of my all-time favourite wrestlers. He is most definitely one of the best of the modern-era. His in-ring action is often stylish and exciting, beaten only by his amazing promo work. His promos are compelling and fantastically acted.
When he was villain, you despised him, when he was the hero you rooted for him. He was not only an impressive athlete and technical wrestler but he also had an undeniable screen presence. He made any segment he was involved in as dramatic and engaging as anything on HBO or AMC. He was forced to retire from in-ring action due to a neck injury that, should he have continued to wrestle would have put him in a wheelchair. His retirement came out of nowhere. He just got in the ring one day on RAW, in civilian clothing and emotionally announced that he has to retire. The shock and sadness of the fans in the arena was audible when he dropped the bombshell that he was leaving. The segment is still one of the most upsetting moments in history for WWE fans.
Although since then he hasn’t disappeared from our screens. He has in fact pursued an acting career, appearing in Haven and Sanctuary. The movie production subsidiary of the WWE, WWE Films are currently working on a number of action and horror movies. They recruit actors from within featuring former and current WWE superstars. For example this year will see the release of Lockdown starring Dean Ambrose and Vengeance starring Big Show. As well as Interrogation which will star Adam “Edge” Copeland alongside C.J. Perry, who WWE fans will know as Lana.
According to Comicbook.com Edge will make his villainous debut in the premiere of season 2. His name was actually lifted from a hero in the comics. Here is The CW’s description of Atom-Smasher:
“One of the most powerful enemies we encounter this season, Atom Smasher has come to Central City to kill The Flash. His incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size makes him more than a match for Flash and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs team will have to come together to find a way to defeat him.”
