Den of Geek’s recent report on the state of the DC movie universe had a lot of interesting things to say about Affleck’s role as Batman. Including that “All told, this deal could see Affleck in the role of Batman for the next ten years or so.” Let’s explore why that is. Den of Geek is reporting that Ben Affleck has signed with Warner Bros. to play Batman in three solo movies. The decision to lock Ben in for three solo appearances, as well as the various crossovers and team-ups is apparently predicated on the success of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in its first test screening.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was reportedly shown to the crew and Warner Bros. bosses in an initial screening of “a near finished cut but not locked”. Nevertheless the incomplete cut of the movie received a “standing ovation”.
Warner bosses are so taken with Ben Affleck’s version of The Dark Knight that they are now essentially focussing the DC cinematic universe on Batman. We of course know that Affleck will make an appearance in 2016’s Suicide Squad and who knows how many other cameos he will have in the DC movies to come? Warner Bros. have a lot of movies being released between now and Batman’s first solo outing in 2018.
One of the forthcoming DC movies is the first Justice League team-up movie in 2017. Which Affleck will obviously star in. So Batman could appear in many DC movies in the run up to his first solo movie which Affleck will write and direct. After which there is a planned two more Batman movies, from the look of things Ben Affleck will be donning the cowl for quite a long time. Which I have to say I am quite pleased about, he is not only a fantastic actor but also a brilliant writer/director.
