News has popped up recently that DC have made the Justice League Dark movie a priority. The occult focussed DCU movie titled Dark Universe had been in development limbo for some time, Warner Bros. are looking to finally get the ball rolling. Tracking Board are reporting that Scott Rudin has now taken the helm and is making a concerted effort to move things forward. He is currently finalising the script and the company are looking to shoot in 2016.
The Justice League Dark film will introduce audiences to a team of characters that are steeped in the mystical and magical side of the DC Universe. As well as resurrecting a character that has already been briefly introduced to viewers, the character I am talking about is of course John Constantine. The character previously appeared in his own TV show on NBC, the show has since been cancelled despite being a hit with a small following. El Rey Network recently revealed that they have acquired the rights to season 1 of Constantine, the network will not be producing new episodes just replaying the old ones. So for the foreseeable future the only place for fans to see the character in new content will be in Dark Universe.
Tracking Board detailed what they have heard about Constantine’s role in the movie in said report: “While the film’s plot has generally been kept under lock and key, we’re hearing that it involves a series of ancient tomes stolen by a madman hellbent on the destruction of humanity. When he learns of this, occult detective John Constantine seeks out a group of heroes that specialise in the mystic and arcane in order to save the world.” For some time Guillermo Del Toro was on board to direct Dark Universe, the director has since moved on to other projects but will stay as a producer. This makes a lot of sense given Del Toro’s affinity for the frightening, bizarre and grotesque. Even if he isn’t directing he should be exactly the right person to produce a movie about the dark-magic side of the DCEU.
