A recent interview conducted by Collider with various members of the Star Wars VII VFX team revealed a lot of unknown details about the making of the movies. When discussing what deleted and extended scenes could be on the coming Blu-ray release Chris Corbould had this to say: “There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling.” This adds another fascinating element to an already enigmatic character.

The fact that they cut out such a pivotal scene is quite baffling really. A character being revealed to be a Force user is quite a big deal. However they did say it in a round about way in a conversation with Rey when she tells her that she is familiar with The Force although she is not a jedi. This makes a lot of sense as she is an ancient and wise individual. It stands to reason that she would be linked to The Force though too old to be involved in an organisation or religion such as the Jedi Order.

The fact that a scene in which she goes to The Resistance base and and gives Leia Luke’s old lightsaber exists tells us that she will most likely appear in a later movie. This was another of her scenes cut from the theatrical release so in the story she technically stayed behind at the bar. However, the fact that there were future plans for her character means we can assume she survived the stormtrooper attack.
