The Intercontinental Championship picture is the place to be at the moment. You do not have to look back far to see a time when the IC Title was not really worth much at all. The WWE clearly came to realise that a once prestigious belt had been devalued due to meaningless title changes and 30 second matches, something had to be done about that.
This has been in the works for a while now, however, the elevating of the championship really began at last year’s Wrestlemania. Dolph Ziggler and Daniel Bryan had some match of the year candidates both in the lead up to the ladder match at Wrestlemania and after it. Giving the title to Bryan when he briefly returned to the ring was the first step to elevating it. Daniel Bryan was of course a main event calibre performer with legendary status in the pro wrestling industry.
Prior to that Ziggler put on some brilliant matches, the ladder match he had against Luke Harper at the TLC pay per view was absolutely amazing. The rest of the show was relatively uneventful but that match was incredible, the Twitter-sphere was buzzing with praise and it made people sit up and take notice of the Intercontinental Championship scene.
Daniel Bryan later had to relinquish the belt due to injury and retired recently on an emotional episode of Raw. After Bryan vacated the title, the new champion was determined in an elimination chamber match at the Elimination Chamber pay per view. Seeing the fate of the IC title decided inside the chamber really helped to boost it’s credibility.
Since then we have seen Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens feud over the championship, putting on some really entertaining matches, Owens as champion defending against Ambrose and visa versa. KO is the current champion, for the second time in his career. What is great about Kevin is that he is the heel champion, but he can back it up. I could go on all day about how good he is and why that is but I won’t. I go into that in more detail in this article.
The Intercontinental Championship picture is probably the most interesting, other than the heavyweight title. This is the belt for all of the underrated indie darlings on the roster. It is a way for the WWE to satisfy the fans that want to see people like Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn getting a push. We have some really charismatic and skilled performers putting on fun, technical matches for a belt that looks and feels legitimate.
We have a big match at Wrestlemania 32 featuring: Sami Zayn, Sin Cara, Stardust, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz and the champion Kevin Owens. Even better, it is a ladder match. That should be a really fun match.
