Superhero fans are about to see yet another landmark moment in the genre as Hugh Jackman is soon to play Wolverine for the last time. Jackman’s Logan has been the definitive version of the iconic Marvel character, playing Wolverine eight times since 2000.
However, much to the disappointment of X-Men fans, he maintains that his outing in Wolverine 3 will be his last. Although we aren’t certain about a lot of things yet, we know one thing for sure and that is that it will be released on March 3rd 2017. As for the title, there has been no official word yet but it is believed to be: ‘Weapon X’.
We also know that the third standalone Wolverine movie will be based on Old Man Logan. This means that the story will take place in the future with a western visual style. In-keeping with this dark story, the movie will have a hard R-rating. This is clearly due to the success Fox has found with R-rated superhero movies in Deadpool.
Fox seem to have an ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ attitude to their marvel properties now. I say this not only due to the R-rating but also because James Mangold is returning to direct. The Wolverine was fantastic, seeing Logan in Japan amongst the samurai was fascinating and it explored parts of the character that were previously untouched. It was a visually beautiful movie and like this new instalment, brought to life stories and characters that previously existed only in the panels of a comic.
Recently released set images have revealed Patrick Stewart’s involvement as Professor X. How old is Professor X going to get? He was no spring chicken in the earlier films and yet he is able to stick around for the movies set in the future. Days of Future Past was set in the far future and though the timeline is unclear, so is this one. Even Wolverine is ageing in the set images and he has a healing factor! Granted Logan has been around for many ages now but for a regular human Charles Xavier must be a ripe old age. With that being said, Stewart is an incredible actor and the character is an icon. I am fine with the writers bending the rules of logic a little to keep him around.
From the set images (originally posted by Just Jared) we also have an idea of what kind of world the story takes place in. The environment is definitely the dust-bowl style you would see in a western, but it isn’t the desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland from the comic.
The final chapter of Wolverine’s story is really shaping up, this could be an epic send-off for Jackman. What do you think of the set images and rumours? Let me know in the comments section.
