We are fast approaching July 9th and the biggest UFC pay per view ever in UFC 200. The company’s momentum shows no sign of slowing after UFC 200 though; many huge fights have recently been announced for UFC 202.
The most recent UFC 202 news is that Cody ‘No Love’ Garbrandt will face Takeya Mizugaki. This comes after Garbrandt knocked out Thomas Almeida in the first round at UFC Fight Night 88. Garbrandt is on an absolute tear, ripping through the bantamweight division with spectacular knockout victories. Given the attention he is getting and the fact that teammate Uriah Faber mentioned him in his post fight interview, ‘No Love’ could find himself in a title eliminator sooner rather than later.
As I reported here previously, Carlos Condit makes his return to the octagon against Demian Maia on the August fight card. This will be Condit’s first match back after a decision loss to welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.
On that same card Neil Magny takes on a proficient striker in Dong Hyun Kim. Magny’s last fight was against Hector Lombard which he won by TKO. The end to this match was very controversial due to the extremely late stoppage, it saw the fight being allowed to continue as Lombard repeatedly took shots to the head despite being unresponsive.
Many MMA fans around the world were anticipating the clash between Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and Glover Teixeira that was originally supposed to take place at UFC on Fox 20. The very same fans were disappointed to hear that the fight had been cancelled as Johnson was going through personal issues. Thankfully, the bout has been rescheduled for UFC 202 on August 20th. The match is believed to be a title eliminator with the winner taking on the champion next. Regardless of what happens with the rankings post-fight, this match has the potential to be a barnstormer.
Donald Cerrone is on the verge of becoming a huge star in the sport; the combination of a desire to have exciting fights, as well as great mic skills is building him a fan base. The MMA fandom also loves that ‘Cowboy’ is always down to fight at anytime. He has recently moved up to welterweight and has easily made the adjustment, finishing Patrick Cote in brutal fashion at UFC Fight Night Ottawa. The guy is a beast.
Cerrone has proven yet again that he likes to fight as just two months after his TKO victory in Ottawa he will step into the octagon once again opposite Rick Story. This is an exciting fight as both fighters are known for their wild striking and ability to make a really fun fight.
UFC 202 will also see Artem Lobov vs Chris Avila. The reason this is such an interesting match-up is because Lobov is McGregor’s teammate at SBG and Avila is teammates with Diaz. The feud between the two fight camps has stretched beyond the main event, I am sure there will be some fireworks backstage at this one.
Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz of course meet again on this card, in what is being called the most lucrative fight in MMA history. With a main event that has been gaining massive mainstream media attention, a return and a mix of exciting fights on the card, it is safe to say UFC 202 is going to be iconic.
