In a shocking turn of events, the main event of the biggest MMA card in history has been scrapped. Last night the news broke that Jon ‘Bones’ Jones has flagged for a USADA doping violation. This means that, according to their tests, Jones had traces of a banned substance in his system. Dana White announced that night that Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt is now the main event.
This announcement came the night of the big press conference for UFC 200, just three days before the landmark event. This has of course created a frenzy amongst the media and the industry itself.
UFC president Dana White called a press conference in the evening with no reason given, got up to the podium and proclaimed that Lesnar vs Hunt was now the main event. After a long silence one of the journalists asked: “Injury or drugs test?”. White’s response was simply: “Yeah”, a USADA representative then broke the news that Jones had tested positive. Bizarre scenes from Vegas.
Despite Jones being the reason for the breaking news, everyone’s thoughts have been with Cormier. The common opinion is that this is just a really sad incident for ‘DC’. At the moment, the light heavyweight champion is no longer appearing on the most historic card in UFC history. He is not only missing a huge pay day but the biggest match of his life. Dana White has said that he still wants Cormier to fight at UFC 200 on Saturday July 9th if they can find him an opponent.
It is important to point out that Jones is innocent until proven guilty. It would be very easy to criticise ‘Bones’ given his previous mistakes but we do not know why the violation has been flagged just yet. Be sure to check back here for updates as they present themselves.
