The now notorious UFC 202 conference call has brought a lot of big news. Possibly the most key piece of information is that McGregor vs Diaz will most likely be a trilogy. A third fight has been talked about amongst fans and analysts but McGregor sounded pretty certain that it would happen.
A third bout between the Irishman and the Stockton native would of course only make sense should McGregor win in the second bout. However, when asked if a rubber match would happen Conor responded: “100-percent”.
A lot of people would like to see McGregor move back down to 145 pounds and face Jose Aldo again. Thankfully, McGregor noted that a third bout against Diaz would not be in the immediate future: “Maybe not straightaway, but most certainly this will be a trilogy fight.”
It seems that all three parties, Nate Diaz; Conor McGregor and the UFC, understand how entertaining and financially viable this rivalry is. As a result they are trying to milk it for all it’s worth. ‘The Notorious’ hinted at this: “Me and the boy have something, and it ain’t finished yet.”
Personally, I am a fan of both of these fighters, so I am very excited for the second bout. With that being said, I feel that if a third encounter is made it would bring diminishing returns.
It is fair to say that the bad blood has already decreased somewhat since UFC 196. In fact, a respect has built-up between the two. The dynamic would continue further down that road after UFC 202 so a third match would be hard to sell. You could no longer book it as a grudge match.
Whatever happens, big money fights are in store for both Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. If you enjoyed this article give it a share and let me know in the comments section if you want to see that third fight!
