Stranger Things has found very well-deserved acclaim from both Netflix viewers and TV critics alike. Despite not having a lot of hype prior to release, the first season proved to be a gem, capturing the hearts and minds of many.
With that, screenwriting brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer are performing a victory lap of the media. In these interviews they have revealed some plans for season 2 and clarified a few things from the first season.
It was in a recent interview with IGN that Matt and Ross revealed the fate of Barbara Holland and the evil Doctor Brenner.
It was not definitively confirmed whether or not Barbara was still alive in season 1. Viewers saw her taken by the Demogorgon to it’s other-worldly domain.
When asked if audiences would see Barb again Matt answered:
I can’t see it happening. But Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.
I did notice that the town had not even reacted to Barb going missing, instead focusing on the disappearance of Will Byers. The Duffer brothers have previously noted that season 2 will be centred on the aftermath of the events in season 1. Matt added that the reaction to Barb’s death would be included in that:
Season one actually takes place over the course of six or seven days- it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.
There is still a chance that villain, Doctor Brenner is alive as we only saw the monster close in on him. Matt Duffer said that we could see Brenner again: “He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there’s a possibility of seeing him again.”
I look forward to jumping back into that world. There are questions raised in the season finale that I desperately want answered. For example, is Hopper working for Hawkins Lab now? Why did he leave the food in the forest? However the question I am most intrigued by is: what new creatures will terrorise the town of Hawkins next?
