MMA fans rejoiced at the recent news that Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone would throwdown on the first UFC event in New York. Now it seems that the epic welterweight clash could be in doubt. TMZ Sports have reported that ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler has pulled out of the fight. This is heartbreaking news as the two fighters are amongst the most exciting in the company.
The two fan favourites would have put on a show, Cerrone has been incredible at 170 and Robbie is an icon of the sport. Lawler has fought in some of the best five round wars the welterweight division has ever seen. His run with the title was legendary.
I was reluctant to believe this initially as TMZ broke the news and they are not exactly a completely reputable source. However, MMA Fighting have since confirmed that this is true. Lawler apparently wants more time to prepare as he suffered a knockout in his last fight at UFC 201.
Hopefully that fight happens at some point down the road. For what it’s worth, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone will still fight on the historic New York card. The UFC are currently looking for a replacement.
