The title of this article makes it sound like a superhero movie but we are of course talking about the latest goings on in MMA. The news broke last night that welterweight champion Tyron Woodley may defend against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205.
‘The Chosen One’ became a controversial figure in the world of MMA after winning the title from Robbie Lawler in a first round knockout. This was due to the fact that ‘Wonderboy’, who was the rightful number one contender, was denied a title shot immediately after Woodley won the belt.
The new 170 pound champion noted that he would rather go for a big money fight with Nick Diaz or Georges St Pierre. The reason fans were angered by this was because Woodley had sat out for a title shot and then chose his opponents after winning the championship.
However, Dana White has said that Thompson will get the first opportunity at Woodley’s 170 pound belt. The UFC are now looking at the first ever pay per view in New York for the title bout.
The card is already shaping up with a clash between Chris Weidman and Yoel Romero in the works. Rashad Evans will face Tim Kennedy in his first foray into the middleweight division. Plus, Kelvin Gastelum steps in for Robbie Lawler opposite Donald Cerrone. It is a shame that the huge welterweight fight will not occur but at least ‘Cowboy’ will still be on the card.
There are also rumours that Eddie Alvarez is in talks to face Conor McGregor for the lightweight championship on that card. The first UFC card in Madison Square Garden is sure to be a record breaker. If you enjoyed this article superman punch that like button and subscribe for more!
