The first UFC fight card in New York has come together rather nicely. The stars are out for the historic pay per view in Madison Square Garden. It was an already stacked card featuring clashes for the welterweight title and women’s strawweight strap.

Also, Donald Cerrone appears opposite Kelvin Gastellum; Frankie Edgar takes on Jeremy Stephens and Tim Kennedy squares-off with Rashad Evans. Not to mention the fact that former women’s bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate, steps in to the octagon for the first time since dropping the belt against Raquel Pennington.

It has now been announced that a long rumoured superfight will headline this huge event. In Madison Square Garden at UFC 205, Conor McGregor will get his shot at Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight championship. The 145 pound titleholder will look to become a two weight class champion. This is something he achieved in Cage Warriors when he held their lightweight and featherweight belts simultaneously.

20160708081924_5d3_9900There has been some controversy around this bout while it has been in the works. When it was being discussed Dana White said that Conor must defend his featherweight belt or give it up. McGregor has not fought at 145 pounds since winning the belt back at UFC 194, in his absence an interim title holder has been crowned in Jose Aldo.

Meanwhile, Khabib Nurmagomedov has been deserving of a lightweight championship opportunity for a long time. An exchange on Twitter pertaining to this fight led to Dana White noting that Khabib would get the next shot. ‘The Eagle’ then posted an image on Instagram of two contracts telling the 155 pound champion to pick a date, 205 or 207.

It is hard to say what happens to Khabib’s title shot now. Does he get an opportunity at UFC 207? The problem with that is if Conor wins he would have to prolong his featherweight defence even further to fight Khabib. It’s a rather strange situation but I would by lying if I said I didn’t want to see McGregor vs Alvarez in New York.

Whatever happens UFC 205 could be the most exciting fight card to date. Along with some serious star power we have three massive title bouts. As an MMA fan you cannot ask for more.
