“I learned to run until I was tired, then run even more than that”- Muhammad Ali
Being a huge boxing fan and an athlete, I take great motivation from the words and actions of legendary fighters. I find that even if you are not a fan of boxing and MMA; you can take a lot of inspiration from the wisdom of combat sports athletes.
Easily the most motivational sportsman in history is also one of the greatest boxers of all time. That man, was Muhammad Ali. Formerly known as Cassius Clay, Ali was more than just a legendary boxer. Ali was a philosopher; a motivational speaker; a humanitarian and wordsmith.
Ali’s questions have provided inspiration to many. Ali famously said: “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses- behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road.”
It is this drive that helped Ali defy the odds in the ring and perform unbelievable feats of human endurance. It was his insane constitution that helped him outlast Joe Frazier in Manilla. The heat was oppressive in their third meeting.
Both men were one win apiece from their previous two bouts and despite the smothering heat, they both put on a show. The ‘Thrilla in Manilla’ was a brutal war and ultimately came down to who wanted it most!
Although Frazier wanted to continue, he was unable to go another round and the decision was made to stop the bout. The fight was stopped before the start of the fifteenth round.
Ali’s unrivalled attitude and perserverance brought him through hard times inside and out of the ring. That is why I have this canvas on my bedroom wall, to remind me of his philosophies and motivational words.
Despite being a divisive figure outside the ring, Mike Tyson is also a motivational boxer. He was relentless in his training and a fearsome competitor in all of his bouts. His speech about the walk to the ring is a lesson in sports psychology.
It is important to know how to psyche yourself up and Tyson was one of the very best at that. I try and channel that attitude when I lift weight. You should always wear the gym gear that makes you feel like a champion.
It helps you focus and fulfill your potential to the fullest. My Mike Tyson tank top, which I am wearing in the image below, helps me focus in this way.
There are far too many inspirational fighters to talk about in one article so there will be more on this in the future. I will also write about motivation from MMA fighters so look out for that! Subscribe for more motivation to push you towards your goals!
