As I previously reported, Anthony Joshua was planning on facing his mandatories and then Deontay Wilder in the Summer. However, circumstances have potentially streamlined Joshua’s path to unifying the division.
Joshua has a mandatory defence against Kubrat Pulev coming up. The IBF title clash has recently been confirmed to take place in October. The plan, as outlined by promoter Eddie Hearn, would see AJ face his other mandatory in the Spring. The ultimate goal would be to beat Pulev and Luis Ortiz, then facing WBC champion, Deontay Wilder in Summer 2018.
News has come out recently that Wilder could face Ortiz. Joshua plans on facing the winner, killing two birds with one stone. He would be filling his obligation to defend the WBA belt and potentially collecting the WBC strap also.
Eddie Hearn commented on the situation to Sky Sports saying: “AJ is up for fighting anyone. It brings a unification fight closer, rather than waiting for Summer.” This is the best thing for everyone, including the fans. It means another big fight for Joshua is closer than before.
