The rumour mill is churning again and the latest information comes somewhat out of left field. For all the MMA fandom knew, Nate Diaz was sitting out until the UFC grant him his rubber match with Conor McGregor. However, on Tuesday night, that changed.
Ariel Helwani is reporting that Nate Diaz could face welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley at UFC 219. This is merely speculation at the moment but certain clues are adding weight to the whispers.
Firstly, we know that Diaz is in camp for a fight, whoever that may be against. This is due to the fact that a teammate of Diaz’s has said as much on social media. Secondly, Tyron Woodley has noted in an interview that he may announce a bout soon. With rumours swirling that he has been matched up with Diaz, it is too much of a coincidence.
The landscape of MMA can change literally over night. On Monday we did not even think a return for Nate was likely for a long while. He was in self-imposed exile, waiting for a rubber match with McGregor. Today, he could be in line for a title shot against Tyron Woodley.
This could be a sign that the UFC are moving on from the idea of Diaz/McGregor 3 at 155. McGregor has talked about fighting for the 170 pound belt as well. This leaves the bout still an open possibility. If Diaz wins, they could meet in the rubber match with the 170 pound belt on the line. This would sweeten the pot and add even more drama to the already huge trilogy fight.
If there is any truth to this fight, it could be fascinating. We would finally get to see Nate Diaz get a shot at gold in a really intriguing pairing of styles. This could be gripping.
