Bellew began his takeover of the heavier divisions in earnest with his WBC title win in 2016. He defended his cruiserweight championship that year against BJ Flores, before moving up to heavyweight to face David Haye.

Despite being a significant underdog in the heated grudge match, Bellew triumphed over the former heavyweight champion. Due to Haye suffering an injury mid match, there were questions left open for many.

Bellew answered these questions and then some when he stopped Haye in the rematch last month. The question is: what is next for one of British boxing’s biggest stars?

On July 21st, the cruiserweight world Boxing Super Series comes to a head when. Murat Gassiev faces Oleksandr Usyk. This is a unification fight for, almost, all the marbles. Gassiev is the IBF and WBA champion while Usyk holds the WBO belt.

Bellew facing the winner in a unification fight would make a lot of sense. The winner would be able to say that they are the undisputed king of the division, holding all of the cruiserweight belts.

After beating Haye the first time, Bellew expressed an interest in fighting pound-for-pound king, Andre Ward. Being considered the number one in the world, a cross number one in the world, a cross all weight divisions is certainly an attractive concept. However, Andre Ward would have to leave retirement for the superfight as he hung up the gloves in 2017.

Bellew has exchanged heated words with Tyson Fury of late. Fury recently returned to the fold after mending his physical and mental health. He is set to face Sefer Seferi in a warm up bout of sorts this June. This hasn’t stopped him from discussing a future domestic clash with Tony Bellew though. That would be one of the biggest fights on British soil ever. The build up would be intense and the fight itself would no doubt bring fireworks.

Personally, I believe the biggest and most viable fights for Bellew are at heavyweight. He would probably eat anyone at cruiserweight alive now. The unification bout therefore would be a great fight to take before a big heavyweight clash.

Collecting all of the cruiserweight belts boost his legacy but it would also be an easier fight before facing a huge name in his last bout. These are exciting times for boxing fans.
