In a recent post to his Instagram account, Alexander Gustafsson detailed his plan for an impending return to the octagon. It is worth noting that the post was a jibe at Daniel Cormier but it still gives us an idea of who ‘The Mauler’ has in his sights.
First Gustafsson asserts that he will fight ‘anyone that is meaningful including Yoel Romero’. Although Romero is a middleweight contender, he has struggled to make the 185 pound limit.
A move up to 205 pounds would make sense for Romero. Light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier even called for a contendership bout between he and Gus’ after his thrilling second bout with Robert Whittaker.
The examples Gustafsson then gave were reliant on Rockhold being unable to fight. However, it is a certainty that Rockhold won’t face Gustafsson as planned because he has just undergone surgery.
Gustafsson mentioned stepping in for either Volkan Oezdemir or Shogun Rua if either fighter pulls out from their bout. The Swedish native also expressed an interest in being an alternate for Cormier vs Miocic at UFC 226.
Gustafsson is chasing the gold. Regardless of who he is matched with next, Gustafsson will likely find himself fighting for a title sooner rather than later.
