The 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ has a special place in the hearts of many, myself included. It is good news then that the remake is in safe hands.

Warner Bros. are bringing Dahl’s story to the screen once again with Robert Zemeckis set to helm the project. Zemeckis is the mastermind behind the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy, another household name.

Warner Bros. have given Zemeckis the duties of writing and directing, with Guillermo del Toro on board as a producer. Jack Rapke will help out Zemeckis with the writing duties. Rapke has been a producer on a number of good projects so this is shaping up to be a great team.

It is telling that they have asked Zemeckis to direct the remake of an adventure many people have nostalgia for. ‘Back to the Future’ inspires a lot of nostalgia for many and is one of the movies with all of the tropes of the current eighties trend.

The ‘IT’ remake was the hit of 2017 for it’s ability to tap into the current obsession with retro. There are many similarities between ‘IT’ and ‘The Witches’. Are Warner Bros. trying to replicate that success with a family audience?

I have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990s version of the story so it is exciting to see icons like del Toro and Zemeckis on board. Are you excited about this news? Did you like the original? Let me know in the comments.
