As of yesterday (Friday) Lyoto Machida has signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator. ‘The Dragon’ is a legend of the fight game and a former light heavyweight champion. Although he is in the twilight years of his career, this is a big acquisition for Bellator.

Machida last fought at UFC 224 against another veteran and pioneer, Vitor Belfort. The bout was bitter sweet, two faces of the sport’s formative years clashed and Machida closed the show with his signature front kick KO.

The bout was believed by many to be a swan song for both fighters. Belfort announced his retirement and bid farewell to the fandom.

However, in a shock turn of events, Machida has decided to continue his career in a different promotion. He will be joining his brother, Chinzo Machida who debuted for the promotion in 2014.

The news was first broken by Ariel Helwani of ESPN and confirmed by Bellator on social media.
