The UFC have announced a huge middleweight clash for UFC 230. Yoel Romero will face rising star, Paulo Costa on November 3rd in New York. According to the UFC at least.

The promotion announced the bout on social media but Ariel Helwani is reporting that it is not official just yet. Helwani notes that the promotion are currently in the habit of announcing fights before the contracts are inked.

However, this is a great fight if it is signed. Paulo Costa is quickly progressing up the 185 pound rankings, despite having only fought in the UFC four times. A win over Yoel Romero could propel him into the title conversations.

Some young blood is desperately needed in the championship picture of multiple divisions. We have seen the usual suspects booked in championship bouts for some time now, with skilled young contenders being overlooked.

As I reported yesterday, the UFC are looking to book another big middleweight bout for this Madison Square Garden card. Chris Weidman vs Luke Rockhold 2 is also on tap for November 3rd. There is a clear path to the title for the winners of these two bouts.
The victor of the Weidman/Rockhold rematch will possibly face the winner of Whittaker’s defence against Kelvin Gastelum. Rightly so. The loser will presumably face the winner of Costa vs Romero, to determine the next challenger after Weidman or Rockhold.

Both Costa and Romero are exciting athletes so hopefully this bout will be signed. The UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden looks to be all thriller and no filler.
