Lately the boxing landscape has been in a state of flux. Huge fights are coming together and global stars are being made on historic nights.
One of the exciting changes that keeps the sport fresh is the big upset. The end to Sergey Kovalev vs Eleider Alvarez was exactly that.
The two squared off last night in Atlantic City with the WBA and IBO light heavyweight championships on the line.
Alvarez is an undefeated prospect but ‘Krusher’ Kovalev is a feared individual. He sits at number 9 on the pound-for-pound rankings. Going into this bout, his only loses were to Andre Ward, who topped that list when he retired in 2017.
With that said, Alvarez shocked many of the boxing fandom when he stopped Kovalev in the seventh round.
Kovalev had some early success, landing a few significant strikes. However, Alvarez looked to be sharper overall and his explosive shots soon took over. He knocked Kovalev down multiple times en route to a TKO.
Eleider Alvarez went from relative obscurity to a champion in the headlines with one win. The Colombian has a bright future after last night.
