Back in 1994, monolith games studio, DICE planned a sci-fi action game under the working title ‘Hardcore’. Although a lot of production went into the project, it never materialised. The ill-fated game is getting a second chance and will now be released in 2019.

As you can see from the trailer below, ‘Hardcore’ is very much a product of its time. The game is a sci-fi stylised side-scrolling shooter. DICE clearly borrowed platforming elements from the games of the time such as ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’, the bullet mayhem is very reminiscent of ‘Contra’.

Strictly Limited Games will bring the 2D shooter to the PS4 and PS Vita with its original retro graphics in-tact, perhaps with some upscaling.

It is ironic that the game’s early nineties aesthetic fits right in these days. The Entertainment industry is currently seeing a nostalgia obsession. The remake; reboot and revival culture means that nothing is off the cards for a return. ‘Everything old is new again’.
