The first UFC event of 2019 could see Robbie Lawler face Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. The clash was speculated on in 2016. The rumours came prior to and shortly after Tyron Woodley’s knockout of Lawler, which marked the beginning of his title reign.

Lawler vs Thompson is being targeted for January. The first event of the calender year could also see a huge middleweight clash in Paulo Costa vs Yoel Romero.

MMA Junkie note that the card will likely take place on January 18th and that it is potentially the first event with ESPN. The UFC struck a huge broadcasting deal with the sporting giant back in May.

At one point, Lawler vs Thompson would have been a blockbuster match-up to launch this new partnership. However, that ship may have sailed. Lawler is reaching the twilight years of his career while Thompson is a dangerous younger contender. Is this a big mismatch?
