Despite being in the twilight years of his career, Manny Pacquiao has a lot of alluring options. The Filipino fighter turned back the clock in July when he stopped Lucas Matthysse, capturing the WBA title.
Becoming a world champion again has placed Pacquiao in conversations with some of boxing’s biggest stars. Eddie Hearn is campaigning to make big acquisitions and has been very vocal about his desire to sign Pacquiao to his DAZN-Matchroom outfit.
Hearn has held talks with the WBA welterweight champion’s team, with a view to make a fight with Kell Brook or Amir Khan.
However, modern great Mikey Garcia is also targeting a bout with Manny Pacquiao. With an unblemished record and four weight world champion status; Garcia is one of the best fighters in the world, pound-for-pound.
After defeating Robert Easter in his last fight, Garcia called-out Errol Spence junior. A clash with Spence would see Garcia challenge for the IBF welterweight title.
This would be a big fight in itself, however, it seems the biggest lure for Garcia is the chance to become a five-weight champion.
Garcia recently told ESPN that a clash with Spence is likely to take place in 2019. The unified lightweight champion would still like to fight before the year’s end, against Manny Pacquiao.
Garcia told ESPN: “We have also talked a little bit with Manny Pacquiao’s team, and there is interest too”.
A win over Pacquiao would make Garcia a five division titilist going into the Spence fight. This makes that contest monumental as Garcia would have the opportunity to become a unified champion in another division. What an exciting time to be a boxing fan.
