Yesterday, (Thursday) Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn promised to reveal a huge signing. Today that man was revealed to be undisputed cruiserweight king, Oleksandr Usyk.

After Usyk’s history making win in July, he called out Tony ‘The Bomber’ Bellew. The Liverpudlian emeritus champion duely accepted and Eddie Hearn began trying to book the fight.

Should the bout come together, it would be Bellew’s attempt to become the undisputed cruiserweight king before riding off into the sunset.

For Usyk, the bout is just the first step to inevitable stardom. Hearn expressed an interest in signing Usyk to a multi-fight deal with an eye for matching him with the likes of Dillian Whyte and eventually, heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

That plan has now come together for Hearn. He announced on social media today that he will be cross promoting Usyk with K2 Promotions, the Eastern European promotional giant.

Usyk’s next fight will be broadcast live on DAZN and Sky Sports. No word yet on who his opponent will be, all parties of course want it to be Bellew. However, negotiations of that bout have met a roadblock in its final stages as the WBA have ordered Denis Lebedev as the mandatory challenger.

Hearn seems to believe that situation can be rectified and that the Bellew bout will go ahead. Although, he did note on IFL TV that should the WBA press the issue, Usyk will move straight to heavyweight.

Even in a move to heavyweight Usyk would find himself in a big fight straight away. As cruiserweight ‘super champion’, he would immediately become mandatory challenger to Anthony Joshua.

Whyte is the front-runner to face Joshua in April 2019 but wants to stay active with a fight in December. We could see Usyk and Whyte battle it out for that opportunity.

Regardless of the WBA’s next move, Matchroom have made a huge acquisition here.
