The welterweight division is one of the most exciting in the sport of boxing. One welterweight fighter seems to be targeted by the division’s all of top names. That man, is Errol Spence Jr.
After beating Robert Easter in July, Mikey Garcia unified lightweight titlist, set his sights on a monumental clash with Spence. Garcia would be moving up two weight classes in an attempt to win a world title in a fifth division.
Spence seems to want that fight, however, it will no doubt take place in 2019. Garcia has said that he wants to face Pacquiao, the ‘regular’ WBA champion in 2018, before a clash with Spence in 2019.
There has also been talk of Spence facing Shawn Porter. The Danny Garcia and Porter fought for the vacant WBC title on September 8th. Spence was present for the event, calling out Porter in the ring after he won.
However, at the press conference he also revealed that Mikey Garcia could be an option if Porter takes time off.
Before leaving the podium, Spence admitted that there was one more thing on his mind, before tearing into Terence Crawford. Spence and the WBO champion may clash at some point but despite the verbal barbs that bout may be further down the road.
While this scramble takes place, Keith Thurman is waiting in the shadows. The emeritus WBC and WBA champion has been out of action for some time due to injuries.
He is on the way back. A warm-up fight is in the works, after which point he intends to reclaim the titles he never lost. Thurman is undefeated at 28-0 with victories over Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter and Robert Guerrero.
The division is complicated, you may even say it is log-jammed. One thing is for sure though, when all is said and done, one of these champions will emerge as a pound-for-pound great.
