Two super middleweight stars have announced their return today. They are both set to face lower level opponents in September but are they on a collision course?

James DeGale has taken to Twitter, breaking the news that he will box in an eight round warm-up, September 30th. The bout will take place on the undercard of Victor Ortiz versus John Molina Junior.

Chris Eubank’s return to the ring was also announced today by Assassin’s Promotions. Eubank Junior will face JJ McDonagh on September 28th in Jedah, Saudi Arabia.

That event is of course Groves vs Smith, the Super Middleweight World Boxing Super Series final. Eubank has not fought since an unsuccessful challenge to Groves’ title back in February.

DeGale beat Caleb Truax for the IBF title in April before relinquishing the belt in July to chase money fights. His next outing is certainly no superfight but DeGale promises it is just an appetiser to ‘something nice and juicy’ in December.

Could Eubank and DeGale clash at year’s end? Michael Benson speculates that this is the case. It is certainly curious that they have revealed their next fight on the same day. There has often been talk of this big domestic clash before.

Regardless of what happens next, the middleweight divisions are bubbling. Groves vs Smith should be a humdinger, the WBA super middleweight title is on the line as well as The Muhammad Ali Trophy. David Lemieux is mandatory challenger for Canelo’s newly won 160 pound title. Exciting times for boxing fans!
