Both sides of the recent middleweight classic have detailed their next move. According to a report by BoxingScene Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions is meeting with Canelo this week.
Gomez will speak to his golden boy about defending his newly won middleweight title against David Lemieux.
Canadian-born Lemieux knocked out Gary O’ Sullivan in the first round on the Canelo/Golovkin 2 bill. This placed him firmly in the title picture and makes him the next natural step for Canelo, other than a Golovkin rematch.
Gomez says they are targeting a December return for Canelo, likely the 15th in the MGM or Madison Square Garden.
BoxingScene are also reporting that Golovkin will wait out until 2019; paving the way for Lemieux’s WBA, WBC, IBO title challenge.
Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler had this to say: “It’ll take about a week just to decompress and go over everything with Abel and Gennady”.
Loeffer continued: “we’ll weigh the options for the spring time or for May of 2019”. Abel Sanchez, GGG’s trainer, added that he is targeting the Canelo rematch for Cinco De Mayo.
That weekend was the initial booking for the Golovkin/Canelo sequel before the positive drug test. The trilogy fight, especially after their last meeting, would be a blockbuster.
