Dana White appeared on Sports Centre yesterday as part of the UFC 229 media rounds. The UFC president announced that a rumoured women’s flyweight title fight is on for UFC 231. Valentina Shevchenko will face Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the vacant strap on December 8th.

The bout will likely serve as the co-main of the Toronto card as Max Holloway’s title defence against Brian Ortega is allegedly in the works for the card. Former featherweight champion Jose Aldo is also targeting a lightweight bout on the card.

There is a compelling narrative to Joanna versus Valentina. Jedrzejczyk is the former strawweight champion and Valentina is a decorated fighter having beaten the likes of Holly Holm at bantamweight. Two of the best women’s fighters in the world are meeting in the middle to properly kick-off a burgenoning division.

Another anticipated women’s MMA bout is booked for UFC 232. On December 29th, Cris Cyborg will put her 145 pound title on the line against 135 pound titlist, Amanda Nunes. Women’s MMA is set to take centre stage in December!
