MMA Twitter has been abuzz with speculation and premature announcements regarding the UFC 230 main event. On November 3rd, the UFC make their return to Madison Square Garden. Despite the New York card being one of the year’s biggest, it is currently lacking a main event.
Diaz and Poirier, who clash in the co-main, have been very vocal about the fact that it should be them, with the inaugural 165 pound belt on the line.
Last night, Ariel Helwani noted that the UFC are struggling to find a headliner for the card. Poirier and Diaz have announced that their bout is indeed for the 165 pound belt.
Helwani and Brett Okamoto have clarified that this is a bit premature. Poirier and Diaz may have jumped the gun as UFC president Dana White has denied that the new belt is in play.
The promotion could be about to make a familiar mistake. Helwani has since added that they are looking to add an interim belt. Fans and industry figures are disillusioned with the number of interim titles, they are used simply for promotion and removed at will.
My thoughts on the need for a super lightweight division are known. The 165 division would be the most exciting in the sport. Surely this is a worthy main event.
