An unprecedented women’s boxing bout has been signed and it is a grudge match. Showtime have announced that the network will host an undisputed women’s middleweight title fight. IBF and WBA champ Claressa Shields will face WBC and WBO titlist, Christina Hammer.
The bout will take place on November 17th in New Jersey. It is the headline bout of a Shobox: The New Generation card. The series is designed to showcase rising stars in boxing.
Hammer is undefeated at 23 pro fights, Shields has only fought six times in the pro leagues but is a top tier star. Shields was an elite amateur with two Olympic gold medals, touted as the future of women’s boxing.
This undisputed title fight and the events of the past five years are a testament to the Olympic boxing program. In the lightweight division, women’s boxing star Katie Taylor, who also won Olympic gold, is a unified world champion.
Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua also secured Olympic gold medals and went on to win multiple world titles. Usyk is the undisputed cruiserweight champion and Joshua is well on the way to sewing up his own division. Olympic medalists are moving on to do great things.
