Rocky Fielding and Callum Smith are achieving great things respectively. Rocky Fielding is set to take on one of the sport’s biggest stars in ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Callum Smith, has cemented his place as the #1 super middleweight in the world. After stopping George Groves, he became the WBA world titlist; Ring Magazine and Muhammad Ali Trophy champion.
Although this was not an internationally viewed bout, there was a big fight feel emenating from the stands. There always is when two British prospects throwdown. Callum Smith’s dominance shone through, a promise of imminent greatness.
Smith immediately rocked Fielding with a right hand. Fielding never fully recovered from that first concussive blow; his technique and footwork was marred by lack of depth perception.
Fielding lived up to his name though; he showed tremendous heart, rushing forward with a flurry of shots. He was then ruthlessly put back down with a clubbing hook from Smith. The performance foreshadowed Smith’s Saudi showing as the hook and bodyshot were key to the win.
It was a clinical finish for Smith and a brave attempt from Fielding. There were prophetic words from the commentary desk as they predicted that Smith would go all the way. Both sides of this bout have progressed massively.
Smith has ascended to lofty heights and Fielding has won a version of the world title, with a Madison Square Garden clash in the future. This epitomises the beauty of boxing.
