Boxing’s biggest star since Floyd Mayweather rode off into the sunset has become Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. His position as the face of world boxing makes him sort after as a number of opponents are clamoring for the chance to face him next.
The unified middleweight champion has been linked with names like Gennady Golovkin; Jamie Munguia, Callum Smith, Sergey Kovalev and now Demetrius Andrade.
September 14 looks to be a surety as far as a date and the Instagram – friendly superstar will likely return to the glamour of Las Vegas. Last week it emerged that Canelo would look to face WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in a shocking move to 175 pounds.
However, word is that Golden Boy Promotions made a low ball offer to the Russian champion’s team, Main Events.
Top Rank boss and legend of the industry, Bob Arum has confirmed that Kovalev is still on track to face his mandatory challenger, Britain’s Anthony Yarde; providing a better offer is not presented.
The light heavyweight title fight is set for August 24 in Kovalev’s backyard but a contingency is in place for Yarde to step aside should the Russian sign for a Canelo superfight.
ESPN’s Dan Rafael has since revealed that Demetrius Andrade, WBO middleweight champion could face Canelo in a huge unification fight – putting Alvarez back in the mix with the likes of Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith.
WBA super middleweight and Ring Magazine titleholder Smith is angling for a bout with Canelo with his eye on a September or December return. The Mexican fighter made a statement at the weight when he stopped Rocky Fielding in December 2018.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Callum Smith’s trainer, Joe Gallagher said: “I think the Canelo fight has to happen either now or December…I don’t disrespect him…But you can’t turn around and start mentioning names and then not take the fight up. So it’s time to put up or shut up.”
Jamie Munguia is a name also linked with both Canelo and Golovkin. A trilogy fight between Canelo and Golovkin always looms but at the moment it seems to be the least likely match-up of the bunch.
