SUPER middleweight and former middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders has split from long term promoter, Frank Warren.
The WBO champion’s split from the Queensbury Promotions boss was apparently amicable.
Saunders was still under contract with the boxing promotions legend but the two agreed on terms to release him from the deal.
With Billy Joe Saunders now a free agent, Eddie Hearn, a rival promoter will no doubt reach out to super middleweight champion.
Hearn has been agressively campaigning to sign all of boxing’s biggest stars to his Matchroom Boxing empire, which includes Sky Sports Boxing and streaming service DAZN.
In recent months Matchroom Boxing have signed former WBO world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker; British heavyweight champion Hughie Fury and top contender Alexander Povetkin.
Saunders would be a big acquisition for Matchroom as one of British boxing’s biggest names. He holds wins over Andy Lee, David Lemieux and Chris Eubank Jr.
Signing Saunders would also bring him closer to an already appealing super middleweight title unification versus Callum Smith – WBA super and Ring Magazine world champion. Superfights are easier to negotiate when both champions fight under the same banner.
