The Workington combat sports gym, which started life as Hokushinko Fight Academy are making big moves in boxing, having trained Kevin Thompson prior to his Bareknuckle Boxing British title win in November. In the gloved ranks, Shane Roe recently stopped Dylan Thompson on Newcastle’s Informal card.
As well as plenty of big away fights, Just Grind and their promotional outfit, Fight Kings FC are developing their homegrown semi-pro show.
Clash of the Titans 24 took place at Whitehaven’s Solway Hall on July 27. A packed house saw a fascinating main event as Cumbrian boxing legend John Rice faced another stalwart, Jon Lund of Southport.
Rice versus Lund 2 was a chess match as both fighters, both in their fifties, know each other well. They appeared to be mirror images of each other, even down to the colours they wore.
Ultimately, Rice comprehensively out-pointed Lund, showing superior fitness and strength. He was clearly proud to bring his storied career to a close with a win over a game, educated and experienced opponent.
‘Sugar’ Shane Roe scored a massive win over Josh Gibson of ICB Derby, stopping the experienced journeymen with a brutal combination in eight seconds. He sealed the deal with a bodyshot which is becoming his calling card having finished Thompson the same way in his last fight.
Alex Nicholson stopped ICB’s Nathan Davy in the third round. It was remarkably technical and composed performance. Despite dropping his opponent multiple times, Nicholson did not get reckless, he finished the fight in a clinical fashion.
Gary Cavanagh’s opponent, Dylan House also of ICB was pulled out in the second round and Jack Grierson stopped his man in the 2nd round, fighting at an overwhelming pace. He threw hailstorms, launching barrages of multi-shot combos.
Bartek Kanaby displayed his unbelievable toughness, fighting out an absolute thriller with Martin Smith. The Fight of the Night was ruled a draw.
In the evening’s charity bouts, Andrew Mitchell knocked out David Mullins in round 2; Mark McGuirk defeated Greg Mitchell via split decision and Kaleem Mahmood stopped Dylan Newman by TKO in round 3. Ryan Johnston defeated Ryan Bates by unanimous decision.
Strength and conditioning and boxing instructor at Just Grind, Dave Straughton called it one of his proudest nights as a coach.
