STRENGTH and conditioning is taking off in Cumbria with a fledgling powerlifting team making big progress.
Just Grind MMA and Fitness Centre, who offer high quality combat sports coaching, have recently installed strength and conditioning equipment.
Having qualified as an S&C instructor, Just Grind’s chief boxing coach Dave Straughton is devising strength programmes.
Just Grind Strength and Conditioning has proven popular as a supplement for athletes, Just Grind’s fighters as well as anyone who wants to get in better shape.
With the JG strength programme and West Cumberland Barbell in full swing, the gym in Workington West Cumbria is abuzz.
As well as powerlifting, West Cumberland Barbell and the fighters at Just Grind use strongman workouts.
The gym is as hardcore as it gets apeing the rough and ready style of Louie Simmons’ West Side Barbell. The strongman log was actually dragged out of a Cumbrian lake before being turned into equipment.
The strongman log has become a point of competition between the athletes; Scott Gorman recently raised the bar with 12 overhead presses on the log.
Meanwhile, boxing prospect Alex Nicholson at just 16 years old can squat 130kg. And Ben Nixon is making big weights fly. He recently completed farmers walks with 110kg on each arm.
