GOLDEN BOY Canelo Alvarez is reportedly targeting Billy Joe Saunders for his next fight in a bid to become a legitimate four weight world champion.
According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic Boxing, Alvarez is looking to face an opponent who has mentioned his name a lot of late, WBO super middleweight world champion Saunders.
Alvarez has been on a rampage through the weight classes. Having started his career at welterweight, he most recently knocked out Sergei Kovalev to the win the WBO light heavyweight.
In December 2018, he captured the regular version of the WBA super middleweight title by stopping Rocky Fielding. And it looks like he will return to super middle against Saunders in May.
Saunders has been calling for the big fights against the likes of Canelo and Gennadiy Golovkin or Callum Smith. Most of Saunders’ career saw him campaigning at middleweight where Canelo had his most famous battles versus Golovkin.
Coppinger reports that talks will now begin between the Saunders and Canelo camps. A win for Canelo would make him a legitimate four weight world champion and for Saunders, it would springboard him to superstardom.
